First I would like to give thanks and credit to Sgt. Lobo for first coming up with this mod. I first saw it during our Xcursion to Osceolla Nat. F. Labor Day weekend, 2000. Soon after that I think I was the second person to install a similiar mod. Other's have since done it with various techniques of attaching the shelf.

Here's how I did it.

First remove the four roof clips in the rear with a phillips screwdriver.

A 48'' x 18'' seems to fit very well in the ceiling without interfering with passengers in the rear seats.

Place a large washer on each of two bolts and they should be just enough to reach the threads in the forward mounts. Make sure the washer is centered over the rungs of the shelf. Here's what the front bolts should look like.

You will need to drill a hole in each of the hose clamps just big enough for the bolts to fit through. Drill it near the adjustment screw on the clamp. Loop the clamp around a wire rung and insert the bolt through the clamp and into the rear mounts. Tighten the bolts and then you can tighten the hose clamp to provide a tight fit of the rack and the side of the roof. I may not look the prettyest but it works well and allows for tightning the rack. After having the rack installed ofr over a year now it hasn't loosed at all.

You may want to add some sort of protection between the rack and the roof to prevent scuffing if you should ever want to remove the rack.

I would not trust the rack to hold heavy loads and because the items are stored above the head the is a remote possibility that in the event of an accident items on the rack could fly forward. For this reason I either put light items, such as towels, sweaters, etc. up top. Or make sure any heavy items are tied down securely.
